Virginia
State University Aspires to All-Steinway Status
Virginia State University, Petersburg, VA
Steinway & Sons, Models B & D
Virginia State University, in Petersburg, Virginia was founded in 1882.
The rich history of this school includes a robust Department of Music,
Art and Design. Department Chair, Dr. Mark Phillips is serious about giving
music students and faculty the best instruments for teaching and performance.
When the funds became available for new Steinway grand pianos, one B
(6'11" grand) and one D (9' concert grand), a selection in Steinway's
New York factory was arranged. Dr. Phillips along with piano professor,
David Shaffer- Gottshalk, commissioned a van filled with four enthusiastic
music students. On April 15, 2004 the group toured the historic Steinway
factory and then preceded to the selection room filled with many fine
new B's and D's. After each student and faculty member played a piece
on each concert grand, a selection was made. The successful committee
returned to Virginia State with the satisfaction of knowing their efforts
will enhance their music performances for many decades to come.
Dr. Phillips once said "One day, we want to be an All-Steinway school
to let everyone know how serious we are as a school of music." With these
latest purchases and their current inventory of Steinway and Boston pianos,
Virginia State is on its way to achieve this great goal.
